Escort requirements are contingent upon the dimensions and type of highway:

On 2-lane highways:

Width over 12' to 14': 1 Lead escort.
Width over 14' to 18': 2 escorts (Lead & Chase).
Width over 18' to 20': 2 Lead & 2 Chase (restricted to movement between 9 AM - 3 PM only).
Height over 15': 1 Height-Pole car.
Height over 17': Public Utility Escort + 1 Height-Pole Car.
Combination: over 12' wide AND over 15' high: 2 escorts (Lead with Height-pole & Chase).
Length over 100': 1 Lead.
Length over 115': 2 escorts (Lead & Chase).
Length over 130': 2 escorts (Lead & Chase).

On 4-lane highways or interstate:

Width over 12' to 14': No escort required.
Width over 14'1' to 18': 1 Chase escort.
Width over 18' to 20': 2 Lead & 2 Chase (restricted to movement between 9 AM - 3 PM only).
Height over 15': 1 Height-Pole car.
Height over 16' (requires special permit): 1 Lead with high pole (as the permit states).
Height over 17': Public Utility Escort + 1 Height-Pole Car.
Combination: over 12' wide AND over 15' high: 2 escorts (Lead with Height-Pole & Chase).
Length over 100' to 130': 1 Chase.
Length over 130': 2 escorts (Lead & Chase).

Notes:

Maximum width for highway movement typically allowed is 20' (based on routes, distance, and traffic volume or type).
Maximum width for interstate movement is 18'.
Height poles should be positioned 6" above the load height on all highways.
